From Mount Misen’s Summit to Hiroshima’s Eternal Flame: A Day of Exploration

I started with a quick train ride from Kyoto to Hiroshima and ended 32k steps later. First up was a hike up to the Mount Misen Observatory on Itsukushima. This hike made the hike in Yamadera seem short. The observatory at the top paid huge dividends as it offered a panoramic view of Hiroshima Bay.

After hiking back down and taking the ferry back to the mainland, I made my way to Hiroshima Castle. Like others, this has a museum in the base and an observation deck on the top with views of the surrounding city. Afterwards, I explored the grounds of the castle while awaiting my parents arrival. Later in the evening, my mother and I walked around the Peace Memorial to observe the Eternal Flame, view the Atomic Dome, and revisit Hiroshima Castle which was lit up. I’ll see these sites in the daytime tomorrow but there’s a calming serenity when visiting these places at night.
