Dodging Deer and Discovering Temples: Exploring Nara’s Sacred Sites

Today started with a trip out to Nara to visit the Tōdai-ji Temple which was home to a giant bronze Buddha statue. The path to visit the Buddha is treacherous as you must dodge the deer who make the grounds their home and follow you looking for food. Luckily I indulged them with some snacks which, apart from one overly aggressive deer, was a fun experience. To avoid the pack, I then made my up the hill to Todai-ji Nigatsudo which provided a scenic overlook of Nara. Completing my morning in Nara, I went to Kasuga Taisha Shrine. One aspect that separates this shrine from others was a small room tucked under one of the main structures which was kept dark to provide an opportunity to view the illuminated lights which line the walkways. While beautiful, I got a hall of mirrors vibe and thus watched my steps closely.
